Laney High School Standardized Dress Code for Students 

To ensure all New Hanover County high school students dress in a respectable, safe, and professional manner, a standardized dress code will be followed by all students beginning with the 2009-2010 school year.   

OVERALL 

  • Oversized, undersized, and skintight, or revealing garments will not be tolerated.
  • Clothing with holes, rips, or tears is not permitted.
  • Manufacturer’s labels or emblems larger than 3 inches by 3 inches are not permitted.
  • All clothing must be free of graphics and screen-printing with the exception of approved Laney gear.

 

Pants, Skirts, Shorts, Dresses, Skorts, and Capris 

  • All colors allowed. (must meet overall standards) Jeans are permitted.
  • Skirts, shorts, dresses, and skorts must be knee length or longer.
  • Pants, skirts, shorts, and skorts must be worn at the waist.
  • No form fitting spandex material or nylon (including leggings except when worn under approved knee-length attire), sweat pants, athletic warm-ups, pajama pants, overalls, and coveralls are prohibited. 

 

Shoes 

  • Some type of shoes must be worn at all times.  Open-toed shoes, sandals, and flip-flops are permissible.
  • No bedroom shoes are permitted.

 

SHIRTS 

  • Collared shirts are required. (must meet overall standards) 
  • Shirts may be long or short-sleeved.
  • Shirts must be tucked in or worn no lower than the hip and must cover the waist band of the pants, skirt, shorts, skort, or capris, whether standing or sitting.
  • No sleeveless shirts are permitted. 

 

Other Approved Tops 

  • Spirit wear such as school letter jackets, school sweatshirts, school t-shirts, and other school clothing is approved.
  • Solid color t-shirts without graphics or screen-printing may be worn under a collared shirt.

 

HEADGEAR 

  • No headgear is permitted to be worn in the building.  This includes hats, scarves, hoods, head wraps, bandanas, and visors. 

 
 

COATS 

  • Must meet the overall requirements.

 
 

Note:  Reasonable accommodations on the basis of a student’s religious beliefs or medical conditions can be made.  The principal can exempt a student from complying with part or all of this policy when compliance would impose a substantial burden due to a medical condition or the exercise of a sincerely held religious belief. The principal may request from the parent or guardian a written statement explaining the medical condition or the religious belief and how it is affected by the standardized dress code.  The principal may also make reasonable accommodations for students to comply with the standardized dress code based on financial hardship or for new students enrolling in the school from outside the New Hanover County Schools.  Reasonable modifications and/or exceptions may be made in order to meet curriculum or safety requirements for certain high school courses.
