  •  Chris Furr  Principal     251-6100 ext. 227  email: dfurr@nhcs.net
    •  Principal Dewey N. "Chris"  Furr was born in Atlanta , GA but grew up in Wilmington. He is a graduate of NHHS in 1973. From there he went on to UNC-Chapel Hill where he graduated in 1977. Mr. Furr began teaching and coaching in New Hanover County at Lake Forest Junior High School in 1977. His primary duties were to teach social studies, and he also coached football, basketball, soccer, and track. During that time, he was also the school's athletic director. Mr. Furr received his Master's in Administration from UNCW in 1985 and  became assistant principal at Trask Middle School that same year. In 1988, he became the Principal there . In 1995, he left Trask and worked as the Personnel Supervisor for the school system for two years (95-97). Returning to his roots, he then came to NHHS as an assistant principal for two and half years. He became principal of Noble Middle School in January 2000 and was there until June 2004, when once again he returned to his roots and became Principal of NHHS. 

      Mr. Furr is married and has two children. His wife, both children, his mother, and his in-laws are all NHHS graduates. He is a member of First Christian Church here in Wilmington.  New Hanover High School is very fortunate to have this dedicated man to lead the school.  His influence is felt from Art Class to Zoology Class and every class in between.

  • "Jackie" Blackmore  Asst. Principal   251-6100 ext. 224  email: nblackmo@nhcs.net
    •  Noal Jackson (Jackie) Blackmore is a graduate of New Hanover High School’s class of 1969. He was a starter on the soccer team that was then in only its second year of existence and won the Most Improved Player award.

      He received his undergraduate degree in Health and Physical Education from UNCW in 1973. He was a member of the UNCW soccer team and was a four-year starter, three-year captain, and twice named MVP. After graduation, Mr. Blackmore became a PE teacher and the soccer coach at Cape Fear Academy, where he was named Regional Coach of the Year in 1978. 

      In 1980, he accepted the opportunity to teach and coach at New Hanover High School where he remained for five years. Following a year of graduate work at UNCW and receiving his master’s degree, in 1986, Mr. Blackmore became the head coach of the UNCW soccer team. He held this position for seven years.  In 1993, he returned as coach of the NHHS men’s and women’s soccer teams and was again named Regional Coach of the Year. 

      In 1998, he accepted a position as Assistant Principal at New Hanover High School. He has served as an assistant coach for the Wilmington Hammerheads professional soccer team since its inception in 1996. Still active in the local soccer league he also enjoys golf, working out, guitar, and all forms of music

     
  • Katherine Watson   Asst. Principal     251-6100 ext. 245   email: kwatson@nhcs.net
    • Mrs. Katherine "Katie"Watson is NHHS's most recent Assistant Principal. Mrs. Watson came to us from Knoxville, TN.
    • She received her undergraduate degree in 1999 from the University of Tennessee as Top Graduate in the College of Education. In 2000, Mrs. Watson was awarded her Master of Education in Special Education from the University of Tennessee, and in 2002, she received her Education Specialist Degree in Administration and Supervision.
    • Although Mrs. Watson has been bestowed with awards and degrees both in her own education and in the education of many special young people, she feels her greatest achievement is having the honor and privilege of serving students, faculty, and parents here at NHHS.
    • Mrs. Watson is proud to be an adopted North Carolinian and a #1 fan of the New Hanover Wildcats!! She is married to Brad, and they are expecting their first child, Jack Bradley Watson in January, 2009.

  •  Phillip Sutton  Asst. Principal     251-6100 ext. 220   email: psutton@nhcs.net
    •  Principal Sutton went to North Carolina State.  He has a wife and one child.

  •  Ben Thomas  Asst. Principal   251-6100 ext.225   email: bthomas@nhcs.net
    • Mr. Thomas is a 1987 graduate of Fayetteville State University. He started teaching/coaching in New Hanover County in 1988. His graduate degree was awarded in 1996, also from Fayetteville State University. Mr. Thomas  has been in School Administration since 1996 either in North Carolina or South Carolina.  

      One of Mr. Thomas' favorite quotes is, "Excuses are tools of the incompetent, they build monuments to nothing. Those who specialize in them are seldom good at anything else."
