History:

The National Honor Society was founded in 1921 by Edward Rynearson. It was created to recognize and encourage academic achievement in high school while also developing the ideals of character, service, and leadership. The Society has flourished; after more than 75 years, there are over 12,500 chapters nationwide. Membership in the society is considered to be both an honor and a commitment.

New Hanover County Procedures for Selection:

*   Student must have a 3.5 or higher GPA after his/her first semester of junior year.
*   Student completes an application (adviser usually distributes these in March) and returns it on time to the adviser.
*   Names of applicants are presented to the entire facu
lty. Students are rated from a scale of 1-4 on a form on the qualities of service, leadership, and character.
*   A minimum of a 3.0 must be earned in all of the categories (service, leadership, character).
*   The Faculty Council meets to review all scores of a 3
.0 or higher. A positive majority vote indicates acceptance for induction at an April ceremony.
*   The same selection process is followed for seniors who did not qualify their junior year. The process takes place usually some time in October.

Important Information about NHHS’s Chapter

We have over 80 seniors in our society that meet on the first Tuesday of every month. The members are available to teachers for tutoring throughout the year. Over the 2004 holiday break, the members volunteered at the American Red Cross and created a song which was used throughout North Carolina during a blood drive. Our members will also continue the tradition of participating in the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life each April. In 2004, our members raised over $1,500!

Our Faculty Council is composed of Mr. Blackmore, Mrs. Bennett, Mrs. Formy-Duvall, Mrs. Edmondson, and Ms. Baker. Mr. Furr also reviews all decisions. Kimberly Rushton is the advisor.

Membership dues are $10.
