NHCS Announces MLK Essay Contest Winners

Three New Hanover County Schools students were among the winners of the MLK 50 Year Commemoration Committee’s essay contest honoring the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and his commitment to speak at Williston Senior High School on the day he was assassinated. Students were given these prompts:

  • How would Dr. King help people be peacemakers?
  • What is your view from the Mountaintop?
  • What do you think would have happened if Dr. King came to Wilmington instead of going to Memphis?

NHCS and the MLK 50 Year Commemoration Committee proudly announce the following winners of the Essay Contest in each category:

Makyn’ze Nelson - Snipes Academy, 2nd grade
“If Dr. King Could Come to Wilmington” Grades K-2 Student Winner

Madalyn Liva - Alderman Elementary, 5th grade
“I’ve Been to the Mountaintop: Martin Luther King, Jr.’s Last Speech” Grades 3-5 Student Winner

Aurelia Colvin - Cape Fear Academy, 7th grade
“To Climb a Mountain” Grades 6-8 Student Winner

Kenneth Marshall, Jr. - Hoggard High School, 11th grade
“View From the Mountaintop” Grades 9-12 Student Winner

The students were honored twice on April 4, 2018 during a student assembly and the evening community commemoration event, both held at Williston Middle School. These winning essays, along with each student’s photo, will be printed in The Wilmington Journal and The Star News. The students will also be featured on WECT and they have received a $100 prize. In addition, they were given a gift bag with a commemorative tee shirt, bracelet, and MLK bookmark.
