New Hanover County Schools Announces Early Release
and Other Schedule Changes on Monday, August 21, 2017
All Athletic Events and Activities Suspended
Driver’s Ed Cancelled

New Hanover County Schools announced today that schools will be dismissed early on Monday, August 21, 2017. Dismissal will occur at 12 noon. The decision to dismiss early was made after many parents expressed interest in viewing the solar eclipse with their students. Additionally, since the solar eclipse is a rare occurrence, the district decided the educational value of the event warrants the early dismissal. The district is also concerned about student safety and did not want to have school buses on the road during the eclipse. In the Wilmington area, the eclipse begins at 1:19 p.m. and reaches its maximum at 2:48 p.m. It ends at 4:09 p.m.

Although students will be dismissed early, the district will remain open for employees. All staff will work their normal hours on 8/21/17.

All athletic events and activities, including a golf match, planned for the afternoon of 8/21/17 will be rescheduled. Driver’s Ed is also canceled on 8/21/17 between the hours of 12 noon until 4:30 p.m.

High schools currently in session, including Isaac Bear, Wilmington Early College, and Sea-TECH will operate on a normal schedule. They will not be dismissed early. Those schools have events scheduled around the eclipse and they will dismiss at their normal time of 4:30 p.m.

The following year-round elementary and middle schools will be impacted by this early dismissal:

Eaton
Codington
Freeman
Lake Forest Academy
Snipes
Sunset Park
Virgo

The first day of school for schools on the traditional calendar is Monday, August 28, 2017.
