New Hanover County Schools Announces Winners from Region 2 Science and Engineering Fair

New Hanover County Schools participated in the annual Regional Science and Engineering Fair on Saturday, February 10, 2018, at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington (UNCW). There were 162 Region 2 projects entered in the competition for Grades 3 through 12. Categories such as biological science, earth science, physical science, as well as technology/engineering were represented. NHCS had 25 projects entered in the competition. Those projects were selected to advance to the regional competition at the January 11, 2018, NHCS District Science and Engineering Fair.

Judges from local schools, businesses, the community, and government agencies interviewed the students and judged their entries. The Regional Science and Engineering Competition was followed by an awards ceremony at the UNCW Watson School of Education. Selected projects from the Regional Science and Engineering Fair will advance to the North Carolina State Fair, March 23-24, 2018, at North Carolina State University (NCSU), Raleigh.

Students marked with an asterisk (*) will be competing in the State Science Fair at NCSU.

The following students were winners in the NHCS Elementary Division:

*Ashwin Varadarajan (Bellamy)

The following students were winners in the Junior Division:

1st place: *Uma Volety (Roland-Grise) – Junior Earth Environmental Science
1st place: *Regan Williams (Roland-Grise) - Junior Biological Science A
2nd place: * Jillian Green (Roland-Grise) – Junior Chemistry
3rd Place: Stephen Mattis (International School at Gregory) – Junior Physics/Mathematics

The following students were winners in the Senior Division:

1st place: *Hanna Azizi and *Yasmin Azizi (Isaac Bear) - Senior Biological Science A
1st place: * Zane Dash (Isaac Bear) – Senior Chemistry
1st place: *Jonathan Morales (Isaac Bear) – Senior Earth Environmental Science
1st Place: *Andrew Katz and *Jacob Usher (Isaac Bear) – Senior Physics/Mathematics
2nd Place: *Saher Agil and *Kieran Schwartz (Isaac Bear) – Senior Technology
