New Hanover County Schools Special Education and Related Services (SPED) is proud to announce that Julie Askew, SPED Director, has received the 2017 Exceptional Educator award from the disAbility Resource Center.

The mission of the disAbility Resource Center (dRC) is to empower persons with disabilities to become and maintain their independence in their communities. The disAbility Resource Center provides services to people with disabilities of all ages and all types of disabilities and those who support them.

“This award is well deserved and exhibits that the Special Education Division’s goal ‘to provide students differentiated, researched-based instruction that will support a successful transition to adult life’ is recognized as effective in the community and across the state. The Division’s work is truly a partnership between the district, parents, and community,” Superintendent Dr. Tim Markley said.

Also nominated for the dRC Exceptional Educator award from New Hanover County Schools were Betsy Stanwood and Cindy Szulewski-Booth. Ms. Stanwood is the SPED Secondary Transition Specialist, and Mrs. Szulewski-Booth is the Assistive and Information Technology Specialist.
