Wrightsboro Elementary Student Wins in State Art Competition

Wrightsboro Elementary Student Wins in State Art CompetitionLilly Aguilar-Banda, a student at Wrightsboro Elementary School, was one of six winners in the 2017 Young Artists Competition sponsored by Professional Educators of North Carolina (PENC). Lilly was in first grade at Wrightsboro when she created the winning artwork.

Lilly and her art teacher, Bronwen Guthrie, were recently recognized at an awards ceremony in Raleigh. Now a second grader, Lilly was presented with a Certificate of Achievement and a cash prize of $50. Ms. Guthrie received a $50 gift of appreciation as well.

Lilly’s work will appear in upcoming PENC publications. Each year, PENC selects winning entries from elementary, middle, and high school submissions. The goal of this competition is to highlight the hard work of North Carolina’s visual art teachers and their students. PENC is a state-based, nonpartisan professional organization that has been serving educators for over thirty years. More information about PENC can be found at

Abby Davenport, 12th grade at Northwest School of the Arts in Mecklenburg County.
