Isaac Bear Early
College High School Student Named 2013 US Presidential Scholar
Megan Chang, a senior at Isaac Bear Early College High
School, has been named a 2013 United States Presidential Scholar
by U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan. Megan is part of the
49th class of Presidential Scholars which recognizes 141 high
school seniors internationally for their accomplishments in
academics or the arts. She plans to attend Harvard University in
the fall.
"Megan is the first Isaac Bear student to be named a US
Presidential Scholar, and now joins a very elite list of NHCS
students to be awarded this high honor. I am so proud of Megan
and her accomplishments and can't wait to see what the future
holds for her,” said Principal Philip Sutton.
Suzanne Micallef, whom Megan chose as her most inspiring and
challenging teacher, will also be honored with a Teacher
Recognition Award from the U.S. Department of Education. Both
will attend the annual ceremony to be held June 16, 2013, and
will receive a Presidential Scholar Medallion.
The White House Commission on Presidential Scholars selects
honored scholars annually based on their academic success,
artistic excellence, essays, school evaluations and transcripts,
as well as evidence of community service, leadership, and
demonstrated commitment to high ideals. The 2013 Presidential
Scholars are comprised of one young man and one young woman from
each state, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico, and from
U.S. families living abroad, as well as 15 chosen at-large and
20 Presidential Scholars in the Arts.
