NHCS Announces County MATHCOUNTS® Competition Results

Middle school students from across the district participated in New Hanover County Schools’ (NHCS) county level MATHCOUNTS® competition on Friday, February 7, 2014. Daniel Cheng, a student from Roland-Grise Middle School was the top overall scorer. The Roland-Grise Middle School team is coached by Christy Kornegay.

Coach Amy Yarborough's team from Noble Middle School was the first place team overall and consisted of the following students:

  • Ben Davis
  • Melanie Su
  • Jason Blaisdell
  • Jack Farmer

Holly Shelter Middle School, coached by Regina Connors, came in second place. Holly Shelter's team members are:

  • Ben Latter
  • Gautum Vemury
  • Kendall Scott
  • David Shin

Devin Bonifacius from Trask Middle School was the “countdown round” winner. The Trask team is coached by Diana Woodlock.

The county level competition serves as a practice for all math teams. Each middle school team will compete in the regional MATHCOUNTS® competition on Saturday, February 15, 2014 at Cape Fear Community College's North Campus.

Two Students Rank in the Top 5% at the American Mathematics Competition

Two students who participated in the MATHCOUNTS® competition also participated in the American Mathematics Competition (AMC) 8 this past fall. Sanya Shah from Roland-Grise Middle School and Melanie Su from Noble Middle School scored in the top 5% with scores of 18 and 19 respectively, and will be listed on the AMC 8 Honor Roll. The AMC 8, open to students in grades 6 - 8, is sponsored by the Mathematical Association of America. The AMC 8 is a twenty-five question, calculator inactive, multiple choice test where students are given forty minutes to complete the questions.
