Winter Park Elementary to Celebrate School Centennial October 6-12, 2012 Winter Park Elementary School will hold a week-long centennial celebration to honor the school’s 100th anniversary beginning Saturday, October 6 through Friday, October 12, 2012. The week’s festivities will begin with an alumni celebration and culminate with a cake and ice-cream social for students and staff. Principal Monica Goza said, “It’s an exciting time to be part of Winter Park. The students and staff have worked tirelessly to show their love for this school by preparing special events for alumni, students, staff and their families to enjoy.” Winter Park Elementary first opened in 1912 and was regarded as a close-knit neighborhood school focusing on building community relationships. By 1916, Winter Park was one of the most attractive spots in the county outside of the city. While the surrounding area has grown tremendously, Winter Park has preserved a caring atmosphere and philosophy while keeping up with high-tech educational resources and increasing community involvement at the school. Notable alumni from Winter Park include New Hanover County Board of Education Chairman Don Hayes, Wilmington City Councilman Charlie Rivenbark, and many more. The Centennial Celebration timeline is as follows:
