Senior Graduation Practice and Information
The time for graduation practice has changed to 1:30pm on June 4. Senior Celebration will follow after practice! Also if you ordered a cap/gown or other graduation items please come by the main office to pick them up! The Ashley High School Class of 2013 Graduation Ceremony will be held on June 8th at 9:00am at Trask Coliseum. Seniors must arrive by 8:00am. Guests must have a ticket to attend. Seniors will be given tickets to distribute.

Information for Rising Juniors and Seniors
Cape Fear Community College Testing Services will be here on the morning of the 29th to administer the Accuplacer entrance test. If you are interested in taking free college classes through the College and Career Promise program, you need to have qualifying scores on either the SAT, ACT or the Accuplacer. The Accuplacer is free and takes about 90 minutes.
NOTE: The Accuplacer is being eliminated this summer and being replaced for a much longer assessment, so if you have any thoughts about ever taking a course, consider taking the Accuplacer now. Scores are valid for five years. Sign up in student services at the desk. Practice test sites. Ashley High School Driver's Education - Summer 2013
Registration for the Summer Session 1 classes will be May 20th until May 30th, 2013. Classes will be from June 13th to June 27th, 2013. A Mandatory Parental Meeting will be held on June 19th at 6:00pm in the Ashley High School Cafeteria. Click here to learn more.
Major Changes in Exam Exemptions
Beginning this semester, the N.C. Department of Public Instruction added required Measures of Student Learning (MSL's) tests for Pre-Calculus, Geometry, Algebra II, AFM, English I, English III, English IV, Earth/Environmental Science, Physical Science, Chemistry, Physics, World History, Civics, and US History. End of Course Tests (EOC's) in Biology I, Algebra I, and English II and CTE VOCATS are also required. The MSL's and EOC's will count as the 25% final exams at the end of the semester. Because of these requirements, exam exemptions for any reason are no longer allowed. Exams in non-MSL/EOC courses will be determined by the teacher and their departments.
Overby School Services has changed its delivery date for caps and gowns. They will be making deliveries on Wednesday April 3rd, directly after spring break. Make sure your payments are completed. If you need to pay on the delivery date, they will only accept cash or money orders on that date. If you have not ordered yet, see Ms. Atkins in the main office for a packet. Ashley Artists in Diversity Matters
Diversity Matters (March Edition) discovers how two awarding winning Ashley artists use the diversity of their backgrounds to create amazing works.
Students may pay for ordering AP exams with a debit or credit card via this link. Cost per exam is $89. There will be an additional processing fee for using this site. Deadline to order all AP Exams is NOON on Monday, March 18th. Students may pay with a check (made payable to AHS) or cash in person in Student Services. See Ms. Spencer. Students wishing to pay with a debit or credit card must use this link. Students who qualify for a fee reduction must turn in appropriate documentation to Ms. Spencer by the noon deadline on March 18th.

CAPS Registration for 2013-2014
Students and parents may go online and may select and plan courses they want to take for next year and beyond. The program will allow you to "Submit" your final course selections from February 6th – 22nd. Students were given recommendations and instructions during homeroom on Wednesday. An advising date and time were included. If your student was absent or did not receive this information, please come to Student Services at your earliest convenience.
Advisors and counselors will be available in labs 312 and 512 on February 7th from 4:30 – 6:30 pm. This lab session is not required but rather is for students and parents who want advisement, have questions, and/or need access to a computer and printer to complete the registration process.
On the same night, an Advanced Placement Showcase will be available to students and parents. You can view syllabi and examples of assignments, speak with students who have taken the courses, and hear from AP instructors about their curricula. Any student considering an AP course should attend.
On February 11th, there will be a presentation for rising 9th graders and their parents about coming to Ashley High School, course requirements, and transition tips. There will also be a Career & Technical Education Showcase available to all students and parents interested in learning more about these courses.
Keep in mind that the online registration program is not a first-come, first-serve system. Submitting quickly will not guarantee placement into the courses you request. We will use the student submissions to get a headcount which will allow us to create a more accurate master schedule. Then, the submissions will be transferred to NCWise to produce final schedules. We encourage students and parents to take their time to make careful and conscious decisions about course selections.
The last date to make changes to course selections for the 2013-2014 school year is February 28th. We will not be accepting schedule change requests during the summer or at the beginning of fall and spring semesters. Until February 22nd, you may make changes; from February 23rd through the 28th, you will need to contact a counselor to make any changes. Please choose carefully and wisely!
After submitting your course selections, print the final page, have a parent/guardian sign it, and return it to Student Services before February 22nd.

Step for Sandy - AHS Hurricane Relief 5K Walk or Run
This run/walk event is a nonprofit event held by Ashley High School. All proceeds will go to Hurricane Sandy victims in Point Pleasant Beach, New Jersey. The event will be located at Veterans Park on Saturday, February 9th. The 5k will begin at 10:30 and the fun walk/run at 10:45. Bring your family, your pets, anyone who wants to help! Results from this year's PSAT administration will be distributed on Monday, December 17th during homeroom. Students will receive their score reports, which include all their responses, as well as their test booklets. Each score report includes an access code which allows the individual student to create and utilize a My College QuickStart account on the College Board's website. In addition, students will bring home information to help understand their results and how they can use them to plan for future classes. More information can be found here and below.
PSAT 9th & 10th GradersDear Stakeholders of Eugene Ashley High School,
I regret to inform you that I have resigned from my position as Principal of Eugene Ashley High School and will complete my tenure as Principal during the holiday break. I will be taking a position with another school district as Assistant Superintendent.
I am thankful to the New Hanover County Board of Education for providing me the opportunity to serve the county and the stakeholders of Eugene Ashley High School. I have enjoyed my time here and I can assure you that this was a tough decision to make. Never-the-less, I am grateful for the opportunities that I have been provided while working in this district.
Dr. David Pugh will be taking over as Interim Principal and will assume my responsibilities and serve for the remainder of the school year. In addition, Mrs. Chris Vaughan is now an Assistant Principal at Roland Grise Middle School. Therefore, Ms. Elizabeth Miars has taken over as Interim Assistant Principal and will assume her responsibilities for the remainder of the school year.
Both Dr. Pugh and Ms. Miars are already on board at Ashley and I am working with them to make the transition. They are both retired Principals and are already doing an excellent job - please extend a Screaming Eagle welcome to them when you see them.

Attention College Bound Seniors
November 12 - 16 is North Carolina's College Application Week. Many colleges and universities across the state are waiving their application fees next week for those seniors applying online at CFNC.org. Ashley High School is having a special event for seniors to apply to colleges in the computer labs at school with the assistance of college admissions representatives on Thursday, November 15th. Seniors may sign up in the Student Services Office. Students may also participate in this online event from home during the week. All students wishing to participate in this event, whether from home or at school, must have an account on CFNC.org . It only takes a few minutes to sign up. The benefits of using this web site are many. Students can research colleges, study for the ACT and SAT, explore careers, apply to college, and even send transcripts! This is a must have account for ALL college bound seniors!!! Please check in Student Services or on this week's Eagle Update for a list of participating colleges and universities.
Congratulations to Kaitlyn Adams
Ashley High Schools own Kaitlyn Adams was selected as one of the recipient of the 2012 Wendy's High School Heisman Program. Like The Heisman Memorial Trophy, the Wendy's program believes in the pursuit of athletic and academic excellence with integrity. The leadership award-honorees are well-rounded young men and woman who excel in learning, performing, and leading in the class room, on the field and in the community.
Eugene Ashley Hospice Club Donation
Last week the Eugene Ashley High School Hospice Club toured the Hospice LifeCare Center of Wilmington and brought with them two dozen pumpkins as a donation. These students will be spending their time this year donating meals, a Christmas Tree, and various other volunteer efforts for the LifeCare Center. Please contact Mrs. Gambino in room 709 if you would like more information or would like to join!
Student wishing to apply to take a UNCW Dual Enrollment course next semester must complete the application and return it to Ms. Todd in Student Services no later than November 1st. You can access the application here. The cost varies from year to year but is approximately $450 per course. Questions should be forwarded to Abey Dessie at 962-3243.
The PSAT will be given on Wednesday, October 17th from 8:30 am until 12:00 pm to all 10th and 11th grade students. 9th graders who have expressed interest but have not yet paid the $14.00 registration fee should bring payment to Mrs. Spencer in Student Services. Seniors wishing to work on their senior projects may report to rooms 313, 216, 706, 707, or the Career Center; an English teacher will be on hand to assist them. All other 9th and 12th graders will participate in homeroom activities in the gym and the Minnie Evans auditorium. Information will be presented by New Hanover County's Cyber Crimes unit on Internet and electronic device safety as well as the legal implications for our students. The Attendance Office will be closed during testing, and students who arrive late will join the events in the gym or Minnie Evans. There will be a homeroom on Monday to inform students where they will test on Wednesday. PSAT Student Guides with the practice exam included will be given out during 2nd period on Friday the 12th.
Taking the PSAT provides 10th and 11th graders insight regarding strong and/or weak academic areas. With this information they can better prepare for the SAT by focusing their studies. In addition, 11th graders will be eligible for consideration by the National Merit Scholarship Program and several other scholarship opportunities. Both groups can begin or continue to receive information from colleges and universities to aid in the career and college planning process.

2012 Technology Speak Up Survey
It is time again for our students, parents, and teachers to participate in the National Speak UP survey. Speak Up is designed to gather feedback on how technology is used at school and at home. Input is needed from all stakeholders: students, parents, teachers and administrators.
"Speak Up, a national online research project facilitated by Project Tomorrow®, gives individuals the opportunity to share their viewpoints about key educational issues. Each year, findings are summarized and shared with national and state policy makers. Participating schools and districts can access their data online, free-of-charge."
Governor's School Information Meeting
There will be an information meeting about Governor's School 2013 in the Media Center on Tuesday, September 25th from 6:00 - 6:30 pm. This 5-week summer enrichment program is truly unique and challenging. Juniors may apply in either the arts or academics, sophomores may apply in the arts only. 2013 National Merit Scholarship Program
Congratulations Alexandra (Sasha) Gombar for being selected as a semifinalist for the 2013 National Merit Scholarship Program! She was chosen among 1.5 million students from 22,000 high schools that entered the Scholarship Program.
