Personal Data: Donald S. Hayes grew up in Wilmington, attended local public schools and graduated from New Hanover High School. Don is a proud Viet Nam veteran and after high school volunteered for military service. He served his country from 1964 to 1968 as an air crewman in a Navy Patrol Squadron and considers his four years in the military as the best four year degree that he ever received. Upon returning to Wilmington, Don received his BA in History and a Master of Education in School Administration from UNC-Wilmington. Don is a former New Hanover County teacher and assistant principal and is currently a self-employed sales representative. His family consists of his wife Margie, a daughter Gayle and her husband, Ron. Over the years, Don has served on numerous School Board committees and is also active in his community. He currently serves on the Board of Directors of Junior Achievement, Planning Committee of Cape Fear Community College, New Hanover County Parks and Recreation Advisory Board, Legion Stadium Commission, Hannah Block USO Facility Advisory Board, member of the American Legion and the Viet Nam Veterans of America and as a Deacon at Winter Park Baptist Church.
