George W. Cox spent his first 23 years in Charlotte, North Carolina and is a graduate of South Mecklenburg High School. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science from The University of North Carolina at Charlotte and a Master's degree in vocational industrial education from North Carolina State University.

Mr. Cox served as an industrial cooperative training and special population teacher-coordinator at North Brunswick High School for thirty years. While teaching, Mr. Cox also held a dual career as a sportswriter/columnist for the Wilmington Star-News and sports editor for the Southport State Port Pilot. Mr. Cox worked as a radio personality for WMFD in Wilmington in the 1970's as a play-by-play sportscaster and sports talk show host. He is the father of three children.
