In the Senate budget proposal is a subsection defining year-round schools.  The year-round schools program in New Hanover County Schools has been in place for 18 years and has never fit this definition.  I fear that that if this definition is included in the final budget, our schools would be forced to revert to a traditional calendar with less than 2 months to adequately prepare.  This would negatively impact the families of nearly 300 staff members and over 1,500 students and their families.

For your reference, NHCS currently has 3 year-round elementary schools (Codington, Eaton, and Sunset Park) and we operate under an alternative calendar in which all of our students begin school at the end of July.  After approximately 9 weeks, we have a 3 week intersession, then resume for our next quarter, another 3 week break, and so on.  We do not have multi-tracking as is common in Wake County.  Our calendar for next year can be viewed here.

I hope that this is a simple issue of clarifying the language of the definition and that we will not be impacted.

I appreciate all you do for us and if I can be of any assistance to you in helping to remedy this issue, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Gratefully yours,

Eric
