School Assignment Options 2010 - 2011

You have a variety of choices to consider for the 2010 - 2011 school year! The following information should provide the answers to most of your questions.  If you need more information, please contact Student Support Services at 251-2929.

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL OPTIONS

An Assigned School is a school near your home to which your child is guaranteed admission.  If needed, transportation is provided.  Click here to find your child’s assigned school.

A Year-Round School offers the North Carolina curriculum offered on a nine-week on, three-week intercession schedule.  You must apply to these schools and they must be within your assigned territory.  Transportation is provided if student resides within transportation zone. Year Round schools are Codington and Eaton.

  • Kindergarten Notifications will be mailed on or before April 23rd.

A Magnet School is a school with a theme that draws students from all over the county. The North Carolina Standard course of Study is taught using this focus area as an approach.   There are three elementary magnet schools: Rachel Freeman School of Engineering, Gregory School of Science, Mathematics and Technology, and Annie Snipes Academy of Arts & Design.   If you already live in the Attendance Zone for a Magnet School, you do not need to apply to that school.  Otherwise, you must apply.  Students are selected by random lottery

  • If you live outside a Magnet School’s Attendance Zone, you must apply.

  • Applications accepted for Kindergarten — February 22 - March 5, 2010

  • Applications accepted for 1st—5th Grades — March 8 - April 16, 2010

Open Choice—A school outside a student’s assigned school area for which the student may apply for a lottery assignment as an “open choice” placement if there is space  available at the school within the student’s grade level.

  • Applications Accepted March 8 through April 16, 2010

  • Random Lottery will be held to select students for available spaces

  • Applications submitted after April 16, will be considered a Transfer.

  • Public school transportation WILL NOT be provided.

MIDDLE SCHOOL OPTIONS

Open Choice—A school outside a student’s assigned school area for which the student may apply for a lottery assignment as an “open choice” placement if there is space  available at the school within the student’s grade level.

  • Applications accepted March 8 through April 16, 2010

  • Random Lottery will be held to select students for available spaces

  • Applications submitted after April 16, will be considered a Transfer.

  • Public school transportation WILL NOT be provided.

Open Enrollment—A school outside a student’s assigned school area for which the  student may apply for a lottery assignment, if there is space available.

  • Open Enrollment Middle Schools are: Williston and Virgo.

  • Applications accepted through August 24, 2010

  • Random lottery will be held to select students for available spaces

  • Applications for open enrollment will not be accepted after August 24, 2010.

  • Public school transportation WILL NOT be provided.

HIGH SCHOOL OPTIONS

Open Choice—A school outside a student’s assigned school area for which the student may apply for a lottery assignment as an “open choice” placement if there is space  available at the school within the student’s grade level.

  • Applications submitted after April 16, will be considered a Transfer.

  • Open Enrollment High School:  New Hanover High School

  • Applications accepted through August 24, 2010

  • Random lottery will be held to select students for available spaces

  • Applications for open enrollment will not be accepted after August 24, 2010.

  • Public school transportation WILL NOT be provided.
