As a magnet school with a concentration in science Gregory has a state of
the art Science Lab and a Science Resource teacher,
Mrs. Beth Brampton
Mrs. Brampton's web page

Each class is scheduled to come to the Science lab at least once a week for 45 minutes. Sometimes the classes go outside to do research or to work on the UTOTES (Using The Outdoors to Teach Experiential Science) gardens. They can utilize many of the outdoor teaching centers located on the campus including many mini-ponds, butterfly gardens, vegetable gardens and bird watching areas.

Mrs. Brampton integrates technology in her science classes by using the SMART board and the document camera. Students use the laptops along with the Venier probes and software to engage students with hands-on science in the classroom. Some of the probes used are: Go Temp, Go Motion, and Go link witch is an interface use to connect other probes like the magnetic field sensor. Students also use the Internet in the science lab to search for information they need for science reports or projects.

The classroom teachers also use "SCIS"-Science Curriculum Improvement Study, for more information go to Education Resources Center, and "UTOTES"-Using the outdoors to Teach Experiential Science.

UTOTES
(Using the Outdoors to
Teach Experiential Science)

UTOTES started in 1995. Staff members were trained and throughout the years parents have been involved in the beautification of the grounds.

Gardens have been created by classes as outdoor labs where children learn by researching plants or animals, and by doing some of the planting. Many of these gardens exist on campus; a special garden has been created and maintained in remembrance of the late Mr. Knoll the school former assistant principal.
Each classroom has selected a garden to maintain and enhance through out the year with the help of a parent volunteer or by students. Each garden has a sign so that the children and parents can identify their classroom's garden.

In 2006 the rain garden was created to help protect Burn Mill Creek,. http://www.nhcs.net/gregory/raingarden.htm The garden is maintain by parents and students.

Green Thumb Club - Parents volunteer their time to help maintain the grounds. They work very hard and their dedication is appreciated.
If you would like to become a garden volunteer you can get in touch with our science teacher. You may e-mail her at bbrampton@nhcs.net.

Iggy the Iguana
Iggy has lived in the science lab for many years, He is the school mascot

Live Animals - As a magnet school with a concentration in Science, Gregory is the only school with a science lab with live animals. Children feed and take care of each one of the animal in the science lab. Some of the animals that have lived in our lab are a lizard called Iggy, parakeets, rabbits, chinchillas, a corn snake, fish, ferrets, a turtle and
a hedgehog. Today we have Iggy, a chinchilla, a hedgehog, the snake, a turtle, and a guinea pig. The feeding of our small zoo is maintained by parents and children. At the end of every week children can checkout the animals for the weekend. At the end of the year parents can check out a pet for the summer months. These pets have a birthday party once a year, the students bring a present for the animals in a form of food.
