North Carolina Teachers' and State Employees' Retirement System

  • Permanent, full-time employees are covered by the State Retirement System. Employees contribute 6% of their monthly salary before taxes.  Once an employee meets certain age and service requirements, they are eligible for a monthly retirement benefit.

    *You can calculate your monthly Retirement benefits by visiting the Retirement System's website (see link above)
    . Look for "Retirement Estimator". This program will allow you to run various estimates and payment options.

    *View helpful Retirement information by visiting the Retirement System's website (see link above). Look for Benefits Handbook to get detailed information concerning Benefits with the Retirement System. "Frequently Asked Questions" is a great source of information as well. 

  • Death Benefit - Permanent, full-time employees who die while in active service after one year as a contributing member to the State Retirement System are covered by a death benefit equal to the employee's salary during a 12 month period (minimum of $25,000 to a maximum of $50,000).

  • Traditional and Roth 401K options are available through payroll deduction for those employees participating in the State Retirement System.
