Q: Is Algebra I a requirement to get into IBEC?
A: No, Algebra I is preferred but is not required and will not prevent acceptance.
Q: Do students have access to UNCW during their ninth and tenth grade years?
A: Yes, initially after being accepted and enrolled into IBEC, students are introduced to the University. Students have PE courses, Science labs and continuous use of library while enrolled.
Q: How are students selected for the program?
A: Students who are selected to attend IBEC are chosen through several different realms. A committee forms and looks at specific rubric criteria including attendance, grades and discipline.
Q: Can any child attend IBEC?
A: No, only students who live in New Hanover County and are entering into the 9th grade can attend IBEC. Students are selected during the end of their 8th grade school year.
Q: Is the school calendar different from traditional New Hanover County Schools?
A: Yes, Isaac Bear’s school calendar is different from that of traditional NHCS, therefore students must adhere to IBEC student calendar on the website.
Q: What are the school hours?
A: The school hours for the 9:00 – 4:00 Monday – Thursday and 9:00 – 1:00 on Friday.
Q: Where is IBEC located?
Adjacent to UNCW at 630 MacMillian Ave. A shuttle bus operates directly from IBEC to UNCW.
Q: Will transportation be provided if my child attends IBEC?
A: Yes, students attending Isaac Bear are provided transportation through county school buses. We are a public New Hanover County School and buses transport students throughout different areas of the county.
Q: How does the program work?
A: Students at Isaac Bear enter at the beginning of their 9th grade year. Students complete all of their high school requirements in the 9th and 10th grade years then they attend UNCW during their 11th and 12th grade years with the possibility of earning up to 60 hours of college credit.
Q: Do I have to apply to UNCW or other colleges/universities?
A: Yes. All IBEC students in the fall of their senior year must apply to UNCW or any other college or university they wish to be admitted to.
Q: Will all my course credits from UNCW transfer to other colleges or universities?
A: Core academic subjects taken at UNCW will have the best opportunity to transfer to any of the "sixteen state North Carolina university system schools. A map of the sixteen can be found on the IBEC college knowledge site. Students interested in pursuing private or out of state colleges/universities need to inquire at the specific school they wish to apply to regarding transfer credits.
Q: Does my child have to take any state tests?
A: Yes, students who attend IBEC are required to participate and complete in the NC Testing Program just as any other school. In order to graduate, students must be proficient on all of the following End-of-Course tests:
Algebra I English I Biology US History
Civics & Economics
Also, students must pass the Computer Skills Test and Graduation Project.
Q: How can I get an application to IBEC?
A: Applications can be found on our website and, toward the middle of the school year, they will be distributed to all NH County middle schools. They may also be picked up at the IBEC office.
