Free Homework Help at NHCPL

Wilmington , NC – August 18, 2006 - Students from 4th grade to 12th grade and in introductory level college courses can get immediate, free homework help from qualified tutors using an online service provided by the New Hanover County Public Library. Tutors are available in math, science, social studies and English.  Spanish-speaking tutors are available in math and science.

The Library is one of the first in the state to subscribe to Live Homework Help from Tutor.com, according to Reference Librarian Stephanie Carver.  “It’s a great service and we’re excited to be offering it to local students in time for the new school year,” she said.

Tutor.com currently serves over 1,300 public libraries and after school organizations.  In the 2005/2006 school year about one million students completed Live Homework Help sessions.

Live Homework Help is available to students from 3 to 8 PM every day of the week through a link to the library’s Web site, http://www.nhcgov.com/AgnAndDpt/LIBR/Pages/DeptInfo.aspx  Enter your NHCPL library card number, and then enter the grade level and the subject for which you need help.   In just a few minutes you’ll be connected to a tutor in an Online Classroom.

One-to-one help is available in math (elementary, algebra, geometry, trigonometry and calculus), science (elementary, earth science, biology, chemistry, physics), social studies (American history, world history, political science), and English (spelling, grammar, essay writing, book reports). Students can ask for help with specific homework questions, as well as subject-specific concepts.

All Live Homework Help tutors are certified teachers, college professors, professional tutors or graduate school students. Every tutor has completed a third party background check and a comprehensive training program. Tutors use features such as controlled chat, an interactive white board, a special math tool for typing equations, and shared Web browsing for a rewarding learning experience.
