Membership Requirements 

  1. Maintain a 3.6 GPA and the high standards of scholarship, leadership, service and character that were used as a basis for selection.

  2. Attend Meetings- Meetings will be held the first Monday of each month immediately after school in the Laney Library. Members will be notified through the school bulletin and it will be posted on the web page if the date and time changes due to school conflicts. You will receive one point for every four meetings you attend. Members must sign in as they enter the library, this will be the check for attendance.

  3. Perform Individual Service Project- Points awarded up to 6 total points. The Individual Project must be approved before a member proceeds with its implementation. The Individual Project Form must be filled out and put in Mrs. Norris's box. This form will be returned to the member at the next NHS meeting or arrangements can be made with Mrs. Norris to pick it up earlier if the member desires.

  4. Participate in at least one NHS Sponsored Service Project- Points awarded based upon the project. Service projects will be planned throughout the school year. Information about service projects will be given at NHS meetings on the first Monday of each month, a notice will be put on Mrs. Norris' door, information will be posted on the website and other announced locations around the school.

  5. Peer Tutoring- Mandatory 5 Hours (Additional Hours can be used to earn points.) Math tutoring lab- 3:40-4:30- Monday and Tuesday afternoons --Room 221. Tutoring at middle schools or elementary schools is also encouraged. Individual tutoring with students - individually arranged or arranged through Laney Student Services.

  6. Pay National Honor Society dues of $10.00 before Thanksgiving break to NHS Treasurer.

National Honor Society Pledge

I pledge to maintain high scholastic standing, 

to seek the light of truth, 

to hold as fundamental and worthy an untarnished character, 

to endeavor intelligently and courageously to be a leader, 

and to give of myself freely in service to others. 

In doing so, I shall prove myself worthy of a place in the National Honor Society. 

National Honor Society Collar

NHS members earn points so they can wear the NHS Collar to Graduation. All National Honor Society Students must ear 12 points before May 15th to be eligible to wear the NHS Collar.

   Additional Ways to Earn Points

  1. Participate in Adopt-A-Teacher Program- 1 Point Awarded for each 2 hours of service.

  2. Helping with Induction Ceremony (Ushering, bringing food, etc.).

  3. Actively serving on the NHS committee to plan an NHS activity (Banner, plan food drive, plan outing to nursing home, etc.)  These points are awarded for organization in addition to points earned by helping to carry out the activity.

  4. Additional tutoring hours over mandatory 5 hours (1 point/each hour).

History of National Honor Society

Helping in the Community with National Honor Society                           

   Tutoring

National Honor Society Members are required to do at least 5 hours of tutoring; members can tutor at     elementary and middle schools to earn points.

   Community Service Projects

NHS will participate as a group in several service projects throughout the year, such as helping to set up and run field day activities at elementary schools. Members have the opportunity to sign up for the service project at the meetings on Mondays.

   Individual Service Project

Each member is required do an individual service project. A member could volunteer at a nursing home or soup kitchen to help the needy. Individual projects must be approved before they are completed. 

   Adopt-A-Teacher

The Adopt-A-Teacher program allows each member to adopt a teacher of their choice to help on their own time. Members can help grade tests or quizzes, staple papers, or whatever their adopted teacher needs extra help with. 

   Student Mentor (Small Learning Community)

NHS members can sign up to be a mentor to a 9th grade student. They will meet with them monthly to see how they are doing. If the mentee needs help in a class the mentor can tutor them. Those who sign up can be more than just a mentor, more than anything they can be a good friend that their mentee can go to for help.
