Laney will be asked to nominate one student for the Belk Scholarship at Davidson College. To qualify, students must have stellar character, academic achievement, intellectual promise, leadership and service commitment. Students interested in being nominated should submit a resume outlining these qualifications to Mrs. Williams in the student services office by October 15.
Catawba College has just been named the 16th “Best Baccalaureate College in the South” by US News and World Report. The first deadline for admission (and to be considered for scholarships) is October 19. Awards start at $14,500 per year. Apply NOW if your GPA is 3.5 or better and your SAT math and reading score is at least 1150.
Any student interested in the NC State College of Textiles, or in any type of polymer chemistry should see Mrs. Williams about the Centennial Scholarship. Awards reach up to $47,500 and include extra money for enrichment projects. Students should express an interest by October 10th.
North Carolina State University offers a variety of scholarships for students who wish to become educators. There is a list of these opportunities in the student services office.
Seniors interested in merit scholarships from Emory University in Atlanta are asked to see Mrs. Williams in student services.

The Thomas Wolfe Scholarship Program is beginning its seventh year at UNC Chapel Hill. This is a full scholarship for students entering their creative writing program. Information on the scholarship and application forms are available at http://english.unc.edu/creatove/tws. Apply by November 2nd.
Cooperative Extension is offering an essay scholarship with a first place price of $1500.00, second place $1000, and third place $500. Only students in New Hanover, Brunswick and Pender counties will be eligible. The topic is “Agriculture’s Role in Sustainable Energy”. Students interested in merit scholarships from Wake Forest University should apply for admission before January 1st. Information for scholarships that do require separate applications is available on the Wake Forest financial aid website.
Sun Trust Bank offers a scholarship sweepstakes drawing to give away $1000 every two weeks. Students may enter for free and eligibility is not based on need or GPA. Apply at offtocollege.info beginning September 14.
The E. B. Scholarship Program at Erskine College in South Carolina is looking for students who have a Christian commitment, leadership potential, and outstanding academics. Interested students must see Mrs. Williams immediately and apply before October 15.
Students interested in pursuing engineering degrees will want to come to the student services office and look at the SAE Engineering scholarship pamphlet.
Academically talented, highly motivated African American seniors are invited to apply for the Ron Brown Scholar Program. Applications are on the web at www.ronbrown.org with two deadlines – one is November 1st and the other is January 9th.
Young Arts recognizes and awards high school seniors in the disciplines of cinematic arts, dance, jazz, classical music, photography, theater, visual arts, voice and writing. Information on cash awards is available www.youngARTS.org. Deadline to register is October 1st.
Merit scholarships are available from UNCG to students who have a GPA of at least a 3.5, reading and math scores on the SAT totaling 1200 or better, and ACT composite score of 27 or higher and have applied for admission to the university. Merit award applications are available on line at www.uncg.edu/fia/meritawards.
Laney can nominate one student for the Prudential Spirit of Community Award. Students who have distinguished themselves through volunteerism in their school or community are asked to fill out a form at www.prudential.com/spirit , print off a copy, and bring it to Mrs. Williams in the student services office. This must be done by October 31. Awards may include an all-expense paid trip to Washington, DC.
