The Free Enterprise Leadership Conference educates high school students about the fundamentals of free enterprise, personal responsibility, workplace integrity and provides leadership training. Sessions are held on the campus of Wingate University and Campbell University. There is a fee of $25 to attend. Applications and information are available in the Guidance office or you may visit http://www.jessehelmscenter.org and go to "Programs." Then click on FELC. Applications should be turned in as soon as possible.
The Governor’s Page Program gives high school students between the ages of 15 and 18 an opportunity to spend one week in Raleigh and learn about the roles and functions of our state government. Pages are assigned to a cabinet level agency or Council of State offices to assist employees and are paid $150 for their service. Two recommendations and an official transcript are required, along with the completed application. Applications for the school year are now being accepted. Applications for the summer will be accepted after January 1. Visit http://www.volunteer.org and click on Governor’s Page Program to download an application and learn more about this truly unique opportunity. You may also see Miss Vaughn in the Guidance office for this information. The North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics is a public, residential high school for academically talented juniors and seniors. This year’s sophomores are eligible to apply. The school was established by the North Carolina General Assembly to provide challenging educational opportunities for young men and women with interest and potential for high achievement in the sciences and mathematics. In fact, the State of North Carolina now awards all North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics graduates tuition grants to any university within the 16-school UNC system! Stop by the Guidance office to pick up an application and brochure or visit http://www.ncssm.edu for more information. The Legislators’ School for Youth Leadership Development, a two-week residential summer program, is funded by the generosity of the North Carolina General Assembly to target young leaders in our state. The program is held on the campus of East Carolina University in Greenville, and operated by its College of Education. Students work to enhance leadership and communication skills, as well as develop conflict resolution and problem solving strategies. Students can be nominated by a counselor, teacher or administrator. Stop by the Guidance office for details or visit http://www.coe.ecu.edu/legsch for more information. Summer Ventures in Science and Mathematics is a cost-free, state-funded program for academically talented students who may pursue careers based in science and mathematics. The program brings rising juniors and seniors together in residential settings for four weeks or intensive study during the summer. Applications are available in the Guidance Office or you can download at: http://www.summerventures.org Cape Fear Community College Dual Enrollment and HUSKINS Classes - All interested students are advised to stop by the Guidance Office for information on course selections and testing requirements. Online College Fair Schedule http://www.onlinecollegefair.com/ is an interactive and free college access tool that allows students and parents to chat live with colleges and universities via the Internet. Through virtual Q&A chat sessions, students learn about each institution, including admission requirements, financial aid, major fields of study, and more. The UNC School of Medicine Research Apprenticeship Program (RAP) is a seven-week summer program designed to increase the number of minority and/or dis-advantaged high school students who pursue careers in the science fields. This opportunity is open to current sophomores and juniors. Students will be housed on the UNC campus and participate in full-time research, structured SAT prep sessions, college tours, science seminars and more!
