In Fall 2006, the Students Against Violence Everywhere chapter at Laney High School was revived. Laney is again an active member of the international SAVE network!

The members in SAVE join together to promote SAVE's mission. SAVE's mission is to decrease the potential for violence in schools and communities by promoting meaningful student involvement, education and service opportunities in efforts to provide safer environments for learning.

In addition, SAVE also:

  • engages students in meaningful violence prevention efforts within their school and community.
  • empowers youth with knowledge and skills necessary to provide service to their community and school.
  • encourages positive peer influences within the school and community through violence prevention efforts.
  • educates students about the effects and consequences of violence as well as safe activities for students, parents, and the community. The student group has already been responsible for planning a events for all students and is excited about helping to.

The SAVE Officers demonstrate leadership while fighting to uphold the SAVE mission. SAVE officers are responsible for conducting monthly meetings, facilitating school-wide discussions about diversity, youth empowerment, relationship violence, gangs, and other topics critical to the school climate, planning service projects, and being role models for other Laney students.

The 2007-2008 SAVE Officers are:
President: Cortney Thurmans
Vice President: Caline Hou
Secretary: Taylor Hardison
Treasurer: Chris McCain
Social Chair: Jonai Lloyd

We are starting a new dialogue series this year to raise awareness of critical topics affecting the lives of youth. Please join us for Third Thursday Chats, held on the third Thursday of each month in the Laney High School Library from 3:45 pm - the discussion dies down.

We are highlighting the following topics this year:

Cyberbullying:  March 20, led by Bionca, Jonai and Jeremy
Peer Pressure:  April 17, led by Justin, Shawn, and Cortney
Topic to be announced:  May 15
