The New Hanover County Board of Education has awarded Laken Flanders of Laney High School and Amanda White of Hoggard High School the 2011 Board of Education Student Scholarship. In its mission to attract quality teachers, the Board of Education awards two $1,000 scholarships providing incentive, recognition, and financial assistance to outstanding seniors in a New Hanover County high school. The scholarships are given to the accredited North Carolina college or university of their choice and will total $4,000 each over a four-year period.
The scholars went through a rigorous selection process proving they excelled academically, have strong leadership potential, are active in their schools and community, and were recommended by teachers or community members. Laken will be attending UNC-Charlotte and Amanda plans to attend Meredith College. Both winners will major in a teacher education program.
