New Hanover County Council of PTAs sponsors
their annual REFLECTIONS program: "A Different Kind of Hero..."
12/07/04 The New Hanover County Council of PTAs annually
sponsors the Reflections Cultural Arts Program in conjunction with
North Carolina PTA and National PTA to encourage and recognize
achievement among the children and youth in our schools. The
National PTA Reflections Program is a very popular and successful
program that addresses all six of the standards for parent and
family involvement. Each year, the National PTA Reflections
program recognizes outstanding student works in literature,
musical composition, photography, and visual arts. These works are
created with a theme in mind. The theme changes each year to
stimulate the creativity in a new direction.
This year’s
theme is “A Different Kind of Hero ...”. NC PTA urges all local
unit PTAs/PTSAs to encourage the children and youth in their
schools to submit their original works in these cultural arts
categories. Entries are judged on the school level and then
submitted to the County Council for the countywide competition.
Schools will be
submitting their entries during the next two months for countywide
judging after January 7, 2005. The Awards Reception will be held

Participate in New Hanover County Council
of PTAs Service Project by Helping School Nurses Help Students
12/07/04
The New Hanover County Council of PTAs is encouraging each PTA,
school, as well as each community member to collect hygiene items
such as deodorant, soap, small washcloths, toothbrushes,
toothpaste, and underwear for young elementary children. Both
travel and regular-sized products are appreciated. Our school
nurses are very excited about this project, since there is no
money budgeted for such expenditures. They are confident that
such items will enable them to provide effective hygiene programs
and improve the health of our student population.
The PTA Council
will pick up your contributions at each school countywide and
deliver them to the New Hanover County School Systems Coordinator
of Nurses or you can also drop them off at the New Hanover County
Schools’ Dale K. Spencer Building. The Council will be collecting
items from now to the end of February. The items will be divided
among the schools, and nurses will give out the items during
classroom sessions and to individual students who do not have
access to these products.
Please know that
you are making a positive impact on the lives of our students.
Thank you for your support!

Project READ at
Williams Elementary
12/03/04 Janice Puckett, Language Arts
coordinator at Mary C. Williams Elementary, recently received a
$4,000.00 donation from The Landfall Foundation for a new reading
endeavor at the school.
In an effort to raise the reading scores of all students, a
team of teachers is collaborating to write a curriculum for third
through fifth-graders that provides a framework for thinking
critically about selections they read. A second grade class is
also piloting the project.
Some unique aspects about the curriculum are that the lessons
are all guided reading lessons and that they revolve around
culturally diverse picture books that build background knowledge
and promote rich discussion. The team has already begun to write
curriculum for and implement the initial phase of the project.
Project READ is already making a positive difference in the
quality of teaching and learning at the school.

Hoggard
Senior Organizes Art Show
11/08/04
Michael Webster, a senior at Hoggard high school, is organizing
a juried art show of the high school students for his senior project.
The show, open to the public, is titled “ Potential” because he
feels his fellow students have the potential to have a professional
showing of their artwork. “Potential” had 95 entries
from over 60 artists at the public high schools; the judges decided
on 34 outstanding pieces that were to be shown in the exhibit.
Michael
began organizing the show the second week of school by contacting
the teachers from the four public high schools and presenting
his idea to them. He collected the artwork from the schools
and made preparations for the judging and showing. The judges,
Mr. Aaron Wilcox and MJ Cunningham, judged the show free
of cost to him on Saturday October 30; and the 95 entries were
reduced to the 34 pieces that will be shown. The reception
will be on November 9, from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m.; at the Independent
Art Company at 19 North Ninth Street (on the corner
of Ninth and Princess Streets).
Michael
says, "Throughout this experience I have had the guidance
and support of many friends, and without them, this would never
have been possible. My mentors in my senior project, Daphne
Holmes and Janis Kiehlmeier, have led me through the various steps
in organizing my art show and taught me how to look at artwork
critically. Dan Brawley has allowed me to use the gallery space
at the Independent Art Company, which I greatly appreciate.
The art teacher at Hoggard, Mrs. Sinclair, has always been someone
I can rely on when I need help, and my English teacher, Ms. Micallef,
has led me through the whole senior project experience."

Principal to Register for DonorsChooseNC
10/07/04 Krista
Holland, Principal of J.C. Roe Preschool, plans to register for
DonorsChooseNC tomorrow morning, Friday, October 8, in an effort
to fund a staff wellness initiative at her school.
DonorsChooseNC is a unique nonprofit venture that provides a
direct opportunity to support educators' classroom projects through
an online registration system for teachers. Donors from anywhere
in the country interested in funding projects can search for projects
they are interested in funding in part or whole.
Pamela Federline, Grant & Special Projects Coordinator for
New Hanover County Schools, says the website is an important addition
to efforts to provide resources directly to teachers. "While
we provide grant opportunities for teachers and schools on a regular
basis, teachers are often time limited or don't have the skills
to write grants. More importantly, teachers too often dip into
their own pockets to fund classroom projects. DonorsChooseNC provides
a support directly to teachers and school administrators to fund
small projects. We hope people in New Hanover County interested
in a unique way to support public education will consider funding
such projects through DonorsChoose."
For more information on DonorsChooseNC, see the website at www.donorschoosenc.org.
For school system information, call Pamela Federline at 254-4186.

Parsley Elementary
a Great Place to Teach and Learn
10/01/04 Last week it was announced that Parsley
Elementary was among 28 semi-finalist schools for a new award
created by Governor Mike Easley called "GREAT PLACES TO TEACH
AND LEARN". Schools were selected from among over 2400 schools
in N.C. based on two criteria: student performance on EOG tests
and positive results on the 2004 Teacher Working conditions survey
in the areas of time, leadership, professional development and
empowerment. The semi-finalist schools represent only one semi-finalist
per every 86 schools. While Parsley was not among the eight winning
schools, it is the only New Hanover Co. School to receive this
recognition. NHCS Superintendent Dr. John Morris visited the school
last week to inform Principal Michael Zentmeyer of the award.
Zentmeyer says of his staff, "I am proud to be associated
with such a special group of students and teaching professionals.
Strong student achievement on EOG tests comes from dedication
over several years by all who work here. The positive responses
to the Workplace survey mean that all of us bring a commitment
and energy to our school on a daily basis. It is appropriate that
the governor and his Teacher Advisory committee have seen fit
to recognize your efforts." For more information on
Parsley Elementary School's award, contact Michael Zentmeyer

Freeman Elementary to Participate in
STARBASE Program
9/17/04 For many kids, science and math can seem
like abstract subjects with no connection to the real world around

the real world of aviation and aerospace into schools, using hands-on,
team-based activities to inspire students to learn and achieve.

Program the week of September 27, 2004. Students from Freeman
will be at the STARBASE location at 2201 South Fort Fisher Boulevard
in Kure Beach on Monday and Tuesday, September 27-28 from 9:30

9/15/04 Eric M. Bost, the USDA Under Secretary

Alderman Elementary School, 2025 Independence Boulevard in Wilmington,
on Thursday, September 16, 2004, from 12:30-1:30 p.m., to announce
a grant of up to $1 million, to kick off a fruit and vegetable
program in 25 North Carolina schools.
