NHCS Students Score Above the State and National Averages on SAT

New Hanover County Schools’ students performed above the state and national averages on SAT scores for 2008.

The district’s SAT scores average 1029 for math and critical reading and 1521 for math, critical reading and writing combined. The national average for critical reading and math combined is 1017, and the national average for critical reading, math and writing is 1511. North Carolina’s average for critical reading and math is 1007 and with writing, it is 1489.

“We are very proud of our students’ success with the SAT and we will continue to strive for improvement,” Superintendent of Schools Dr. Alfred H. Lerch, Jr., said. “Two of the major reasons for the success in NHCS include improved rigor in the high school curriculum and new requirements for college-bound students to have additional math courses beyond Algebra II.”

NHCS scored among the best of the urban school districts in North Carolina. The SAT scores for the district have been on a positive trend during the past several years. The following is a breakdown of the New Hanover County Schools' SATscores for the traditional high schools in critical reading and math:

  • Hoggard is above the state and national average at 1073, up from 1063 last year.

  • Laney is at the state average and below the national average at 1007, up from 983 last year.

  • Ashley is above the state and below the national average at 1008, down from 1017 last year.

  • New Hanover is below the state and national average at 998, but they are up from 972 last year.
