New Hanover County Schools Receive Adequate Yearly Progress Mathematics Results

The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction has provided New Hanover County Schools with the preliminary Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) data for the 2007-2008 academic year. Math goals were reported for grades 3-8 and all goals were reported for high school. AYP measures the level of progress required under the No Child Left Behind federal law. In New Hanover County, 11 schools made AYP in mathematics. These schools are Bradley Creek Elementary, Bellamy Elementary, Holly Tree Elementary, Eaton Elementary, Ogden Elementary, Pine Valley Elementary, Codington Elementary, Parsley Elementary, Wrightsville Beach Elementary, Roland-Grise Middle School and Isaac Bear Early College High School.

Nine schools missed achieving AYP for math by only one target goal. Those schools are Carolina Beach Elementary, College Park Elementary, Anderson Elementary, Blair Elementary, MC Williams Elementary, Winter Park Elementary, DC Virgo Middle, Myrtle Grove Middle and Williston Middle School. Williston, DC Virgo and MC Williams showed significant progress in the number of targets met this year as compared to last year. The progress shown at these three schools demonstrates that the corrective measures NHCS has implemented district-wide are effective.

NHCS has already begun implementing action plans to improve student academic performance in all subject areas. These efforts include educational consultants who worked with the principals and teachers of the schools with the greatest needs during the 2007-2008 academic year and will continue to work with them, additional staff development for all administrators and teachers, revisions to the School Improvement Plans and a strong partnership with Cape Fear Communities in Schools that provides extra resources such as tutoring, mentoring and a variety of other support services for at-risk youth at designated schools.

In June 2008, New Hanover County Schools held an Administrative Leadership Conference for all principals, assistant principals and central office staff. Administrators received staff development training and specific data which will allow them to customize the most effective strategies for their schools. The data allows the schools' instructional teams to identify the interventions necessary for the sub-groups in AYP and to provide instruction that maximizes the growth potential of students.

New Hanover County Schools Superintendent Dr. Alfred H. Lerch, Jr., stated, "With the corrective measures we currently have in place, I am confident NHCS will continue to make progress in meeting AYP goals. This is a work in progress and it will take time to see the overall major improvements." He added, "I am optimistic that we will continue to see immediate impacts as well as long-term gains."
