Isaac Bear Early College High
School Juniors Ready for the Transition to UNC-W
Isaac Bear Early College High
School (IBECHS) has met another milestone in its preparation to
have students ready to take college classes during their third
year of high school. The early college opened school year
2006-2007 and is now housed on the campus of the University of
North Carolina - Wilmington. On July 30th and 31st, the first
class of Isaac Bear, Cohort I, will participate in an
orientation for the upcoming academic year at UNC-W.
Approximately, 72 students are enrolled in classes for the
upcoming fall semester, taking on average 200 classes. On July
31st, parents will attend orientation with their student and
will be given information as to how to make a smooth transition
from high school to college life at such a young age. The
highlight of that day will be when students actually pick up
their books at the university bookstore.
Isaac Bear Early College High School will have three cohorts
beginning in August 2008. Cohort I will still be supported by
the high school and the upcoming sophomores, Cohort II, are
returning with the anticipation of following in the footsteps of
the junior class and a new group of freshmen will arrive on
campus for the first time on August 11th for a week-long summer
orientation.
IBECHS achieved its AYP goal for mathematics, according to the
results released earlier this week. Tilly Gurley, school
principal, credited students and staff's hard work and high
standards to achieve these results. Mrs. Gurley said, "I am very
pleased with the continued success of Isaac Bear and the credit
for this success goes to the talented hardworking teachers and
students and the unending support of our parents. Isaac Bear is
a testament to the ability of a small learning community to make
a difference for all students."
IBECHS currently has 201 students and looks forward to growing
and serving more students.
