Rachel Freeman School of
Engineering Educators Attend Teacher Academy
Recently, five educators from
Rachel Freeman School of Engineering attended a North Carolina
Teacher Academy at Appalachian State University. The
participants included: Meghann Crow, Brandy Metzger, Andrea
Raines, Melissa Stephens and Melissa Williamson.
The North Carolina Teacher Academy is a professional development
program established and funded by the North Carolina General
Assembly. The mission of the Teacher Academy is to enrich
instruction and impact student achievement by supporting the
growth and retention of highly qualified teachers through
research-based professional development in the areas of school
leadership, instructional methodology, core content and
technology.
The teachers from Rachel Freeman School of Engineering attended
the module, Developing Arithmetic and Algebraic Reasoning in
Elementary Grades. This module will help teachers understand
student thinking and train teachers to probe student responses
and analyze student work. The teachers learned problem types
developed from over twenty years of research and how to
incorporate them into their lessons. They also learned to
recognize the types of strategies students use in problem
solving and how to help students make sense of mathematics.
Learning of mathematics has to be accompanied with ways to think
about mathematics. This training will help them design lessons
that will promote student dialogue about the ways they think
about mathematical concepts. In addition, another focus of this
module is linking arithmetic and algebra in elementary grades.
