New Hanover County Schools
Observe Graduation Awareness Week
Governor Michael Easley has
proclaimed September 7-13, 2008, as "Graduation Awareness Week"
(GAW) in North Carolina. During this week, educators, community
leaders, faith-based representatives, parents and students are
encouraged to come together to raise awareness of why it is
important for North Carolina's economic development that all
students graduate.
As a way to promote Graduation Awareness Week in New Hanover
County Schools, Hoggard High School's DASH students will "take
on" a challenge course on Wednesday, September 10, 2008, at UNC-Wilmington,
601 S. College Road, Wilmington, NC, from 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
Challenge Course activities are coordinated by NHCS Experiential
Education to engage students through "hands-on activities" to
promote decision-making, problem-solving and communication
skills.
New Hanover County Schools offers a variety of schools and
programs to foster high school graduation:
Lake Forest Academy
Isaac Bear Early College High School
Mary S. Mosley Performance Learning Center

In addition to NHCS' Drop-Out Prevention programs, graduation
coaches are available in all of the traditional high schools:
Ashley, Hoggard, Laney and New Hanover. At Laney High School,
Beth Keller, graduation coach, encourages the school’s
administrators to display school pennants, colors and mascots
from their high school, college or graduate school they
graduated from to show students the importance of graduation and
initiate conversations about the benefits of graduation.
A powerful drop out prevention tool called Inside Out is also
available in all NHC middle and high schools. A copy of this DVD
is also available at each elementary school by contacting the
school’s counselor or social worker. This documentary features
prison inmates promoting education and was created to help young
people and their parents understand the importance of staying in
school and the probable consequences if they don’t.
For more information, contact NHCS Safe and Drug-Free
Schools/Dropout Prevention Coordinator, Beau McCaffray, at
