Anderson Elementary Observes
World Autism Awareness Day
On Wednesday, April 2, 2008,
Anderson Elementary School's administrators, teachers, students
and school health supervisor will observe World Autism Awareness
Day (WAAD) by wearing red, blue and yellow shirts. At 1:30 p.m.,
they will all come together to create a life-size autism
awareness ribbon on the school lawn.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
(2001), autism and its associated behaviors have been estimated
to occur in as many as 2 to 6 of every 1,000 individuals.
Overall, the incidence of autism is four times more prevalent in
boys than in girls and typically appears during the first three
years of life. Children and adults with autism tend to have
difficulty with verbal and nonverbal communications, social
interactions and leisure or play activities.
World Autism Awareness Day will shine a bright light on autism
as a growing global health crisis. WAAD activities will help to
increase and develop world knowledge of the autism epidemic and
will impart information regarding the importance of early
diagnosis and early intervention.
