BRADLEY
CREEK ELEMENTARY TO RECEIVE UPGRADES FROM CITY OF WILMINGTON/NCDOT
SAFE ROUTES TO SCHOOL GRANT
Bradley
Creek Elementary School will soon receive some major upgrades
designed to increase the number of students who walk or ride
bicycles to school. These upgrades include new sidewalks, a new
crosswalk, new signs, a new bicycle rack and a community
education program all made possible through a $211,800 Safe
Routes to School grant recently awarded by the NC Department of
Transportation to the City of Wilmington.
The grant application was one of 14 submitted for the
demonstration program and one of six selected statewide. This
demonstration program represents the first dispersal of federal
Safe Routes to School funds in North Carolina,
and is intended to serve as a guide for future grant cycles.
The City of Wilmington submitted three applications for
the demonstration program in December 2007.
Bradley Creek Principal Sherry Pinto said, "We are very
excited about the expanded health and fitness opportunities this
funding will provide to our students."
"I think it is wonderful that our students will have a SAFE
opportunity to walk or pedal to school and get some exercise at
the same time, and I hope the families that live close by will
take advantage of this opportunity once it is complete. I also
want to thank Joshua Mello and the City of Wilmington for
supporting Bradley Creek in this manner," she added.
Bradley Creek Elementary School is located at 6211 Greenville
Loop Road and serves 306 students. The Safe Routes to School
program at Bradley Creek Elementary will include:
1. A new 3100-foot sidewalk on the west side of Greenville Loop
Road between Greenville Village mobile home park and the front
door of school.
2. An expanded school zone to include new sidewalk.
3. A more visible crosswalk on Greenville Loop Road.
4. New signs & flexible pedestrian bollards on Greenville
Loop Road.
5. A new 16-bicycle rack.
6. Partnership with Centro Latino for three outreach events with
the Latino
community in the Greenville Village Mobile Home Park.
7. 4-H bicycle safety education sessions at the school.
8. Production and distribution of bi-lingual neighborhood
walking and biking maps.
