Codington Students Earn
Honorable Mention at the
2008 Eastern Region Mathematics Fair
Two Codington students earned
Honorable Mention at the 2008 Eastern Region Mathematics
Fair held March 14, 2008, on the campus of Eastern Carolina
University. Grant Szaloky, second grader and Logan Hanchett,
kindergartner are now eligible to compete in the State
Mathematics Fair, sponsored by the North Carolina Council of
Teachers of Mathematics, on Friday, April 25 at the North
Carolina School of Science and Mathematics in Durham.
Logan's project titled, "ILM Airport Flights" focused on
airline flights into and out of the Wilmington International
Airport. He acquired an arrival and departure list from the
airport's information office and made two charts indicating
the number of scheduled flights. The math he used involved
addition and distinguishing time (morning flights vs.
afternoon flights).
Grant's project titled, "Pizza-Ronis" uses the PI R Square
formula to estimate the number of pepperonis on pizza. The
size of the pepperonis and pan will determine the number of
pepperonis for the pizza.
