National Weather Service Meteorologist Visits College Park Elementary

On Monday, June 2, 2008, at 9:00 a.m., Stephen Pfaff, meteorologist from the National Weather Service, will hold a one-hour presentation, for second grade students at College Park Elementary School, regarding weather and weather forecasting. Part of the presentation will include hurricane preparedness to prepare students for the hurricane season.

For the past nine weeks, second grade classes have been studying weather through experiments, observations and hands-on projects. They have been reading thermometers, accurately measuring and describing outdoor temperature, wind direction and speed, precipitation, discussing hurricanes and tornadoes, identifying clouds and their purpose and the water cycle. Students observe their cloud finder wheels, three times a day, and identify the clouds using characteristics of the different types of clouds on the wheel. They also visited their weather station, which is set up outside their classroom, and chart rain levels, the temperature and the direction of the wind. Safety precautions for severe weather have also been discussed with the students.

For more information, contact Rebecca Opgrand, principal at College Park Elementary, at 910-350-2058.
