Rachel Freeman School of
Engineering Receives ExploraVision Award
The 16th annual Toshiba/National
Science Teachers Association (NSTA) ExploraVision Awards Program
announced its 2008 Regional winners, spotlighting students’
innovative ideas for future technologies. A project entry from
Rachel Freeman School of Engineering has been chosen. On
Thursday, March 20, at 9:00 a.m., an assembly will be held at
the school. There will be an overview of all projects and
special awards will be presented by a representative from the
Toshiba Corporation.
As a regional winner, the school received a “Regional Winner
Awards Package,” which included a laptop, banner for the school,
a portable DVD player for the team coach, a school plaque, and
framed certificates for each student, coach and mentor.
David Guerrero and Benjamin Mears, 3rd grade students, Brandy
Metzger, their coach, and Paul Nichols, their mentor, entered
their project titled, Stethoscope 1000. Their entry explained
how the device would advance in the future. This new stethoscope
would be able to extend so doctors would not have to be close to
a patient, have hinges so it could fit in your pocket and be
easier to carry around, have cables connected to speakers to
hear the heartbeat more clearly, and have a heater built in with
cloth covering the doctor’s ear pieces to make it more
comfortable.
Rachel Freeman’s team is one of 24 selected regional winners.
The team must now design a website and build a prototype of the
technology. The website and prototype are due April 10 and will
be judged along with the original entry by a national judging
panel at the end of April.
Regional winners are invited to participate in the national
competition for a chance to win a savings bond and an invitation
to attend the Toshiba/NSTA ExploraVision Awards Ceremony weekend
in Washington, D.C., June 4 - 8, 2008. The national judging
committee’s decision will be announced by May 1, 2008.
