Hoggard High School Student
Chosen to Speak
at the 2008 AVID Summer Institute
Catherine Stukes, an AVID
(Advancement Via Individual Determination) senior at Hoggard
High School, has been selected to speak at the Atlanta AVID
Summer Institute, July 22 and 23, 2008. Through a nationwide
search, Catherine’s unique and compelling essay that fits this
year’s theme, AVID: Empowering Minds - Enriching Lives, was
selected. She will be speaking at two different luncheons to an
audience of teachers, counselors, principals and community
leaders and will receive a $500 scholarship from the AVID
Center.
The AVID Center was established in 1992 as nonprofit
organization and the program has developed into a fourth through
twelfth-grade system that successfully prepares students in the
academic middle for four-year college eligibility. Avid is an
in-school academic support program for grades 4-12 that prepares
students for college eligibility and success, places
academically average students in advanced classes and levels the
playing field for minority, rural, low-income and other students
without a college-going tradition in their families.
