IDEA Surrogate Parent Training Scheduled

The New Hanover County Schools' Special Education and Related Services Department contracts with Family Support Network of Southeastern North Carolina, Inc., to recruit and train Surrogate Parents to uphold parents' rights and responsibilities, as identified in the Federal Special Education Law, The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), when the parent is no longer able to be at the child's Individualized Education Program (IEP) meeting. The Surrogate Parent is only involved with the child in regards to educational decisions.

Trained Surrogate Parents are needed for Early Intervention services, Part C of IDEA, the child's Individualized Family Services Plan (IFSP), birth to three years of age, and for Part B of IDEA, the Individualized Education Program (IEP), children three to 22 years of age. Community volunteers and any Guardian ad Litem are welcome; however, therapeutic foster parents, group home staff, Department of Social Services' employees, or public school system employees are not eligible under the IDEA law. Surrogates for school-aged children and Early Intervention are needed for New Hanover County Schools.

IDEA Surrogate Parent training is scheduled for Tuesday, May 6, 2008, from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., at the Wilmington Children's Developmental Services Agency, 3311 Burnt Mill Road, Wilmington. To register for this training, call 910-792-6133.
