Laney High School Plans
Community Garden
WHO: Laney High School's
Growing Youth ‘n Living Color group, students, and staff
members, and community members
WHAT: Student, staff, and community volunteers of all
ages will be working together to create the Laney Community
Garden. Volunteers will be shoveling dirt and mulch, putting in
landscape timbers, planting flowers, watering plants, spreading
mulch, and picking up trash related to the project. All of this
is possible through a Learn and Serve America grant Laney was
awarded for the 2007-2008 school year in the amount of $14,017
to implement community gardens in New Hanover County.
WHEN: Global Youth Service Day, Saturday, April 26, 2008
from 8:00 a.m. to 12 noon
WHERE: Laney High School, 2700 N. College Road
HOW: Supplies for gardening and the clean up have been
purchased with Learn and Serve funding and donated from local
businesses in support of the Laney Growing Youth ‘n Living Color
project.
WHY: America’s young people - from kindergartners to
university students - have the desire, energy and ability to
make a real difference in their communities. Service-learning
offers a unique opportunity for them to get involved in a
tangible way by integrating community service projects with
classroom learning. Service-learning engages students in the
educational process, using what they learn in the classroom to
solve real-life problems. Students not only learn about
democracy and citizenship, they become actively contributing
citizens and community members through the service they perform.
BACKGROUND: Learn and Serve America supports and
encourages service-learning throughout the United States, and
enables over one million students to make meaningful
contributions to their community while building their academic
and civic skills. By engaging our nation’s young people in
service-learning, Learn and Serve America instills an ethic of
lifelong community service. More information can be found at:

Global Youth Service Day is the largest annual celebration of
young volunteers, where millions of young people in countries
everywhere highlight and carry out thousands of community
improvement projects. GYSD offers a way for local, national, and
international organizations to:
-
PROMOTE youth participation,
service and learning;
-
EDUCATE the public, the media,
and policy-makers about the contributions of young people as
community leaders around the world; and
-
MOBILIZE youth and adults to
meet the needs of their communities.
