Schools Accept Applications for Enrollment
New Hanover County’s Magnet
Schools are currently accepting applications for enrollment.
Applications will be accepted from February 4, 2008, through
April 18, 2008. All students will be selected by random weighted
lottery.
A Magnet School is a school with a theme that draws students
from all over the county. The North Carolina Standard Course of
Study is taught using this focus area as an approach. There are
three elementary magnet schools, which foster three themes:

Rachel Freeman School of Engineering is a community of student
engineers who use team work, communication and creative thinking
to solve problems as they build dreams and become lifelong
learners in a global society. As society increasingly depends on
engineering and technology, Freeman students begin to understand
these fields as they encounter engineering projects in math,
science, reading, social studies, art, music and technology
classes.

Gregory’s School of Science, Mathematics and Technology students
will experience a technology-rich program that integrates
science, math, and technology throughout the curriculum.
Hands-on science lab, innovative cross-curricular technology
integration, comprehensive mathematics program, cutting-edge
software and interactive instructional support, personal student
enrichment programs and after-school tutoring are just a few
highlights that Gregory School of Science, Mathematics and
Technology offers.

Snipes Academy of Arts & Design offers experiential learning
which is grounded in arts-based instruction. Curriculum utilizes
thematic webbing reflecting both horizontal and vertical
alignment, cross curricular and two-way integration between
subject areas allowing differentiated instruction, instruction
that is specifically designed based on enriched assessments and
learning opportunities that reach a variety of learning styles
by employing multiple intelligences.

Applications are available in the Student Support Services
Department, 6410 Carolina Beach Road, Wilmington, at the magnet
schools or online at http://www.nhcs.net/forms.htm. Applications
will be accepted during the following periods:
Kindergarten: February 4 - 15, 2008
Notifications will be mailed on or before April 25, 2008.
Grades 1 - 5: February 18 - April 18, 2008
Notification will be made by letter.
Transportation will be provided for all magnet school students.
