New Hanover County Middle School Students
Succeed in Regional MATHCOUNTS Competition

The regional MATHCOUNTS competition was held on Saturday, February 23, 2008, at Murray Middle School. Teams from New Hanover County Schools did exceptionally well securing the first, second, and third places in the Team Competition and several students finished among the top 10 in individual competition.

The team from Roland Grise Middle School took top honors finishing first in the Team competition and having all four of its team members finish among the top 10 individuals. The team members are Frances Lu, Rosa Yang, Kammy Liu, and Aiwei Yan. Kammy Liu finished as the top scoring individual for the day. Aiwei Yan finished as the third individual top scorer, while Frances Lu finished fifth and was the winner of the Countdown Round. Rosa Yang finished eighth. The team from Roland Grise is coached by Christy Kornegay and Glen Cronin.

Mathletes from Myrtle Grove Middle School and Noble Middle School also did well. The team consisting of Taufik Raharjo, Owen Burwell, Jun Huo, and Zach Grieb from Myrtle Grove finished as the second place team. Taufik Raharjo was the second highest individual scorer and Zach Grieb finished seventh. The coach for Myrtle Grove Middle School is Aimee Bunker. Noble Middle School finished third in the Team competition. Members of this team are Wey Wey Su, Jeon Wook Kang, Will Schoolfield, and Andrew Stowe. Noble’s team is coached by Judith Wells.

Qingyang Xu, from Williston Middle School, finished fourth in the individual competition. His coach is Cheryl Williams.

A total of 182 students from 50 different schools will compete in the state MATHCOUNTS competition on March 14, 2008, in Durham, NC. The top 10 students will vie for scholarships and awards from NC State University and Duke TIP program. All three teams, as well as Xu, will represent New Hanover County Schools at this competition.

MATHCOUNTS is sponsored in North Carolina by Duke Power, Progress Energy, PSNC Energy, BellSouth, North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Land Surveyors, NC State University, Duke TIP Program and the North Carolina School of Science and Math.
