Murray Middle Schools’ Answer the Call Wins Overall Competition

On Saturday, May 17, 2008, Doug Towle, 8th grade math teacher at Murray Middle School, and a group of nine students, traveled to Raleigh to race alternative-fuel vehicles they had built for the 13th Annual Electric Vehicle Challenge. The group created four cars and competed against 26 schools. After the all-day competition, a team of three, Casey Arthur, Erik Dahlin and Alex Hazeltine won the overall competition.

Mr. Towle has been determined to take math and science to another level. Last year, he came up with an idea to give students a hands-on approach to learning, and he chose solar power. Funding was a challenge; therefore, he applied for two grants and received approximately $1,300 for his program, “Answer the Call,” focusing on alternative energies.

The race is sponsored by the nonprofit organization SMARTT Challenge, Students Making Advancements in Renewable Transportation Technology. This organization is designed to educate children, and the general public, about alternative-fuel technology, electric vehicles, the environmental benefits of avoiding oil, and reward students for innovative vehicle engineering, as well as raising awareness about alternative fuels.
