New Hanover High School
Automotive Students
Compete in State Competition
Recently, two New Hanover High
School students, Mathew W. Farr and David A. Calhoun, advanced
to the North Carolina state finals of the 2008 Ford/AAA Student
Auto Skills competition. The two students competed as a team
against nine other teams at the state competition, April 24-25,
2008, held at the Performance Instruction and Training Center in
Mooresville, NC. The competition was sponsored by AAA Carolinas.
The students represented the automotive technology classes of
New Hanover High School and were selected to take part in the
state competition after passing a qualifying test in which they
had to answer general automotive questions. Farr and Calhoun,
both juniors, have spent the year working with their automotive
technology teacher, Robert Millis, to prepare for the state
competition.
At the state competition, Farr and Calhoun worked together as a
team in the 90-minute competition. They were challenged to
identify problems or intentional bugs in a timed car repair
contest and then drive the repaired car to the finish line. Farr
and Calhoun placed 10th overall in the competition.
