News and Announcements

School Briefs:

Roland Grise Middle School has participated in the animal shelter drive for the past six years. Due to the students' strong and consistent interest in animals, Roland Grise Middle School is sponsoring a club that focuses on animals and this drive. Approximately twenty dedicated students are meeting to discuss pet care, fundraisers for pets and visits to the animal shelter. Interested students, parents or community members may contact Chris Potter, club advisor, at 910-350-2136.

Parsley Elementary received a $2,000 Best Buy TeachTM Award. The $2,000 Best Buy gift card has been used to purchase photo editing software and digital cameras for students in Grade 3-5 for integrating creative digital imaging in the language arts, social studies and science curriculum.

Murray Middle Schools' Life Skill II class received a $200 grant from the Knights of Columbus, which will assist with community- based instruction activities.

Millie Dean, reading specialist, and the students she serves at Trask Middle School have been awarded a grant for $1,000 from First Book. The books purchased become the personal property of the children by the Reading Remediation Program. Reading opens doors, expands the limits of the imagination and entertains and enriches the mind. Each child will receive approximately six books each ranging from informational, historical fiction, science fiction, realistic fiction, fantasy and picture books.

Two classroom teachers at Lakeside High School have received grants: Mr. Jack Poulos received a Future Corps grant (Wilmington StarNews) to build wood duck boxes for Greenfield Lake and Ms. Rebecca Flynn received a Wilmington Chamber Foundation & Progress Energy mini-grant for "Teaching Social Responsibility Through Recycling" program. To date the class has recycled several hundred pounds of newspaper, 72 lbs. of mixed paper, 1.5 lbs. of aluminum and 5 lbs. of plastic.

Myrtle Grove Middle School's Mighty Meteors Team is conducting a children's book drive to benefit area pre-schoolers and kindergartners. New or gently used books (English or Spanish) that are suitable for young children are needed. Please contact Mrs. Woodell at 910-350-2100 x617, to contribute to this literacy initiative. Books will be collected until April 4, 2008.
