School Briefs:
Roland Grise Middle School has participated in the animal
shelter drive for the past six years. Due to the students'
strong and consistent interest in animals, Roland Grise Middle
School is sponsoring a club that focuses on animals and this
drive. Approximately twenty dedicated students are meeting to
discuss pet care, fundraisers for pets and visits to the animal
shelter. Interested students, parents or community members may
contact Chris Potter, club advisor, at 910-350-2136.
Parsley Elementary received a $2,000 Best Buy TeachTM
Award. The $2,000 Best Buy gift card has been used to purchase
photo editing software and digital cameras for students in Grade
3-5 for integrating creative digital imaging in the language
arts, social studies and science curriculum.
Murray Middle Schools' Life Skill II class received a
$200 grant from the Knights of Columbus, which will assist with
community- based instruction activities.
Millie Dean, reading specialist, and the students she serves at
Trask Middle School have been awarded a grant for $1,000
from First Book. The books purchased become the personal
property of the children by the Reading Remediation Program.
Reading opens doors, expands the limits of the imagination and
entertains and enriches the mind. Each child will receive
approximately six books each ranging from informational,
historical fiction, science fiction, realistic fiction, fantasy
and picture books.
Two classroom teachers at Lakeside High School have
received grants: Mr. Jack Poulos received a Future Corps grant
(Wilmington StarNews) to build wood duck boxes for Greenfield
Lake and Ms. Rebecca Flynn received a Wilmington Chamber
Foundation & Progress Energy mini-grant for "Teaching Social
Responsibility Through Recycling" program. To date the class has
recycled several hundred pounds of newspaper, 72 lbs. of mixed
paper, 1.5 lbs. of aluminum and 5 lbs. of plastic.
Myrtle Grove Middle School's Mighty Meteors Team is
conducting a children's book drive to benefit area pre-schoolers
and kindergartners. New or gently used books (English or
Spanish) that are suitable for young children are needed. Please
contact Mrs. Woodell at 910-350-2100 x617, to contribute to this
literacy initiative. Books will be collected until April 4,
2008.
