AVID students in New Hanover County High
Schools strive to excel. Currently, three of the ten Dell
Scholarships awarded to students in North Carolina have been
presented to New Hanover County students:
Khadeeja Bennett - Hoggard High School
Amanda Jones - New Hanover High School
Taniqua Smith - Hoggard High School
Dell Scholarship recipients receive
$20,000 toward their college education and a Dell computer.
Other scholarship recipients are:
Melford Hill, New Hanover High School,
who received the Verizon Scholarship, which will fund 25% of his
four-year tuition.
Jeren Hernandez, Hoggard High School,
has been awarded the 2009 Teaching Fellows Scholarship. This
scholarship provides $6,500 per year, for four years, to North
Carolina high school seniors who agree to teach for four years
following graduation from college in one of NC public schools or
United States Government schools in NC.
AVID is a college-readiness program
designed to increase the number of students who graduate and
enroll in four-year colleges. Although AVID strategies are to
help all students, the focus of the AVID elective is on the
least served students in the academic middle, many which will be
first-generation college.
