Codington Elementary School Students Honored at State Math Fair

Recently, two New Hanover County Schools, Codington Elementary and Gregory School of Science, Mathematics and Technology, participated in the 2009 State North Carolina Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCCTM) Fair, at the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics in Durham, NC. Three students from Codington Elementary School earned the following awards and have been asked to display their projects at the NCCTM Conference in Greensboro, NC, in October 2009.

Colby Styers, second grade student, earned 2nd Place for his project, “Raisins, Raisins, More Raisins?” Colby compared three different brands of Raisin Bran cereal to see which one had the most raisins. Fifth grade students David Oh and Logan Joyner earned an Honorable Mention on their project, “How Many Books Were Checked Out of the Library?”

The NCCTM is the professional organization in North Carolina of all persons responsible for the teaching of mathematics. Its membership includes teachers from all levels, kindergarten through graduate school, and other professionals who work with curriculum and materials for the teaching of mathematics.
