New Hanover County Schools’ Traditional High Schools
Implement Standardized Dress Code for New School Year

When the 2009-2010 school year commences on August 25, 2009, New Hanover County’s traditional high schools will implement a new standardized dress code for students. Each high school, Ashley, Hoggard, Laney and New Hanover, will have their own dress code specifications; however, there are commonalities, which follow:

Collared shirts (Any color is acceptable and school shirts can be substituted, including t-shirts.)

  • Pants, shorts, skirts, etc., must be khaki color, blue or black.
  • All pants, shorts, skirts, dresses, etc., must be knee length.
  • No tears, rips or holes in shirts, pants, etc.
  • No oversized or tight-fitting clothing.

As a result of a comprehensive study to adopt a standard code of dress for high school students and strong support from parents and faculties for a more defined policy, principals were directed and encouraged to develop individual school policies through their School Improvement Teams. With consideration given that every school has different needs, each school’s dress code has allowed enough flexibility to accommodate students who transfer from other schools. A “clothes closet” has also been planned to assist students with hardships or to provide students with appropriate clothing. These garments will be loaned to students.

“Our purpose in implementing the standard dress is to make sure we have an environment at school which conveys, 'we're here to work and to learn.' This is not time to relax or just hang out with my friends. We believe that the standard dress policies we will implement in 2009-2010 will help us convey that message,” states Principal Chris Furr.

The new Standardized Dress Codes have been published in schools’ newsletters, a summary of key points will accompany student report cards, a copy will be mailed with student schedules and the full text will be in the student/parent handbooks. In addition, the dress codes are currently posted at each high school's website .
