Laney High School
Holds USAF JROTC Awards Night
Strong community support highlighted the
23rd Annual AFJROTC Honors/Awards night, recently held at Laney
High School, 2700 N. College Road, Wilmington, NC. Members of
respective fraternal and military support organizations
presented medals, ribbons and certificates to exceptional
cadets.
The awards ceremony was highlighted by
the change of command ceremony during which time Cadet Major
Brandon M. Yelton assumed command of the unit, NC-802, for the
2009-10 school year. The ceremony also included several other
commendations, which follow:
• NC-802 was recognized for achieving
Distinguished Unit status for the sixth consecutive year.
• The Principal’s Award, earned by Cadet
Terrence D. Spivey. CMSgt Charles L. Smith presented his award
to Cadet Mykayla Allery.
• Chapter 11, Disabled American
Veterans, represented by Member George Williams, presented a
medal to Cadet Crystal Delacruz and a $500 check to the unit for
exceptional community support.
• The unit was honored to have 1st
Sergeant Kenneth Pike present the Tuskegee Airman Incorporated
AFJROTC Cadet Award to Cadets Zachary Nifong, the Outstanding
Freshman Cadet and Morgan Jones. Representing the Air Force
Sergeant’s Association, CMSgt Charles L. Smith, USAF (Retired),
awarded the medal to Cadet Roger Chapman. Patriot Les Klvana
presented the Military Order of the Purple Heart to Cadet
Mykayla Allery, the Outstanding Sophomore Cadet.
• CMSgt Smith presented the Scottish
Rites Bodies Award to Cadet Brandi Musselwhite and the National
Sojourners Award to Cadet Stephanie Benton.
• The Lower Cape Fear Chapter of the
Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) Award, represented by
Compatriot Bob Avent, was presented to Cadet Dorian Jackson.
• The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW)
Award was presented to Cadet Nicholas Satorre by Chief
Information Systems Technician Anna Allegretto, a member of VFW
Post 2573.
• The Military Officers Association of
America (MOAA) medal, ribbon and certificate were awarded to
Cadet Tyrekie Meyer by Colonel Don Petersen, AUS (Retired).
• The recipient of the Military Order of
the World Wars Medal (MOWW) was Cadet Brian Register. Gary O.
Green, Lieutenant Colonel, USAF (Retired), Adjutant of the Col.
Bill Sheets Chapter, presented the medal.
• The Reserve Officers’ Association (ROA)
was represented by 1st Sgt. Kenneth Pike, American Legion Post
10 Honor Guard. Cadet Kevin Ashley garnered this medal, ribbon
and certificate.
• The American Veterans (AMVETS) Award
was presented to Cadet Andre King by Mr. Jerry Wolf, a member of
the AMVETS Boiling Springs Chapter.
• The Stamp Defiance Chapter of the
Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) was represented by
Mrs. Beth Steelman, who presented the award to Cadet Vanidee
Faulk.
• The American Legion Post #10,
represented by 1st Sergeant Kenneth Pike, presented the American
Legion General Military Excellence Award to Cadet Cody
Pritchett, the American Legion Scholastic Award to Cadet
Jonathan Nixon and the American Medallion to Cadet Genevieve
Kidney.
• The Order of the Daedalians Award was
earned by Cadet Jesse Tucker. Lt. Col. Gary O. Green, a lifetime
member of the Daedalians, presented the award.
• Glenn Drew, President of the Cape Fear
Chapter # 366 Air Force Association, presented their award to
Cadet Brandon Yelton, who also achieved the Distinguished
AFJROTC Cadet Badge as the Outstanding Junior Cadet.
• Cadet Jonathan Nixon, the outgoing
Group Commander, was awarded the Outstanding Senior Cadet and
earned a $250 scholarship from the Air Force Association. He
also earned the AFJROTC sword, which was presented by Mr. Gene
Rivenbark, Assistant Principal at Laney High School.
