National Children's Mental Health Awareness Week
The National Federation of Families for
Children's Mental Health declares May 3 - 9, 2009, as National
Children's Mental Health Awareness Week to increase the public
awareness of well-being and human development of our nation's
children and youth. The National Federation encourages all of
its local chapters and statewide organizations to use this week
to promote positive mental health, well-being and social
development for all children and youth.
The New Hanover County Schools' mental
health team includes behavior support specialists, counselors,
psychologists and social workers. In addition, mental health
therapists provide services to families at 20 New Hanover County
schools, in conjunction with the New Hanover County Health
Department, Wilmington Health Access for Teens and Learning
Perspectives.
The NHCS Mental Health Committee guides
the provision of positive behavioral support (PBS), which
includes but is not limited to the following:
- Collaboration with outside agencies
and individuals that provide mental health services.
- Individualized plans to support
students that struggle within the academic arena.
- Mental health professionals on site
at various schools to provide a continuum of care.
- Specialized training opportunities
for teachers to provide them with tools and interventions
when working with mental health issues in the classroom.
- On-going support to reduce the
barriers to learning associated with mental illness.
- School-wide PBS.
- Day treatment.
