Myrtle Grove Middle School Student Receives National Recognition

Ivy Byrd, eighth grade student at Myrtle Grove Middle School, has won a Gold Medal award for her photograph entitled "Gorgeous Pain," and has been recognized on the national level of The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards of 2009.

Ivy, her family and teacher are invited to participate in the national celebration events in New York City from June 3 - 5, 2009. On June 4, 2009, the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers, the nonprofit which presents the Awards, will honor winners at a special ceremony at Carnegie Hall in New York City. Selected award-winning art and writing will be exhibited at the World Monuments Fund Gallery in Manhattan from June 3-24, 2009. During the national celebration events, the Alliance also provides opportunities for attending artists and writers to receive insight and advice from a variety of professionals in the creative industries through a series of workshops.

"We are so proud of Ivy's photograph that depicts the pain middle schoolers endure with braces to have beautiful teeth. We congratulate her teacher, Mrs. Donzella Johnson, for encouraging Ivy's talent," said Principal Robin Meiers.

For more information, contact Robin Meiers, principal, at 910-350-2100.
